It all began in August 1983 when in a secret meeting in Japan, Toyota’s Chairman Dr Eiji Toyoda set a challenge to a team of strategists, engineers, and designers: “Can we create a luxury car to challenge the very best?” With more than 400 prototype vehicles built and more than 4.3 million test kilometers driven in Japan, the USA and Europe. Over 1,400 engineers and 2,300 technicians worked on the “F1” project. Every detail was exhaustively thought through – build tolerances were at least twice as accurate as competitors.
Then in May 1987, after four years of development time and many full-sized clay models later, Lexus executives signed off on the final LS design. The brand name ‘Lexus’ is chosen to represent luxury and high-end technology. Soon after, the first LS 400 launched, incorporating hundreds of new patents and setting new standards for quality and value. Almost 3,000 were sold in the first month after launch.
And in 1990, Lexus launched in Europe with a single model range: the LS 400. In the US, Lexus launches its second model, the ES luxury sedan. By 1991, Lexus began its dominance in JD Power customer satisfaction surveys in the USA, becoming the first brand to win the ‘triple crown’ of sales satisfaction, initial quality, and being rated overall top brand for customer satisfaction. Lexus also became the USA’s number one luxury import brand, outselling BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Later in 1993, the new Lexus GS 300 was launched in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Two years later, the second-generation LS 400 launched. The philosophy of steady evolution of Lexus cars was evident in its design. And in 1997, the V8 4.0-litre engine with VVT-i was used in the HPS concept car. This intelligent valve technology revolutionizes efficient yet high-performance driving.
By 1998, Lexus became the USA’s top-selling luxury brand for the first time, outperforming domestic manufacturers Cadillac and Lincoln. That same year, the RX 300 launched, creating a completely new market segment – the luxury SUV.
In Germany in 2002, the IS sedan achieved a customer satisfaction index of 86%, the highest score of all cars listed in the JD Power survey. Also this year, Steven Spielberg asked Lexus to help design a car for Tom Cruise to drive in his blockbuster movie, Minority Report, a film set in 2054. A year later, the LF-C concept makes its debut at the New York Motor Show, establishing the hallmarks of the new Lexus design direction, incisive simplicity and advanced technology.
2007, the LS 460 was voted “World Car of the Year 2007”. That same year, the new IS F became the first of Lexus’ ‘F’-marque cars is launched in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show. A few years later in 2011, a unique Lexus full hybrid LS 600h L Landaulet was released. This model featured a one-piece, transparent polycarbonate roof that served as the official Royal Wedding car on the occasion of the marriage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.
2014, Lexus collaborated with the multi-faceted and highly talented will.i.am for the Striking Angles campaign for the new NX crossover. The musician-artist designs a one-off version of the car that is unveiled during Paris Fashion Week. Two years later, the production version of the LF-LC was unveiled.
2018, the UX 250h and ES 300h were launched with the fourth generation Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid powertrain. Both hybrids feature an incredibly efficient petrol engine, a new hybrid transaxle, a new compact battery, and a new power control unit. Both are also capable of running in zero emissions mode for up to 50% of the time. And 2019 marked thirty years of amazing experiences. In February of that year, Lexus announced its 10 millionth vehicle sale. Key to this growth is the world’s widest range of electrified luxury hybrid cars. More than 1.6 million Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids have been sold since 2005. Lexus showcases its vision of future electrification with the LF-30 Electrified Concept.
2021, the LF-Z Electrified concept was introduced. This is the Lexus Electrified future. Lexus also passes the milestone of 2 million global sales of electrified vehicles and announces a plan to sell only BEVs globally by 2035, and in Western Europe, the USA, and China by 2030. Launch of joint air racing team with competition pilot Yoshihide Muroya.
The same year, Lexus revealed the second generation NX, featuring Lexus’ first Plug-in hybrid, the NX 450h+, which sets new benchmarks in the segment in terms of range and efficiency. Premiere of the all-new LX flagship SUV, with all-around improvements in off-road and on-road performance and first ever VIP grade. The LC Convertible is named Best Luxury Car of 2021 in the Women’s World Car of the Year awards.
